My Diet Plan
I am constantly looking for ways to refine my personal diet and weight loss program so that I can achieve the health and fitness goals that I have set for myself.
With only a few minor changes in my lifestyle and paying closer attention to what I eat, I have actually managed to lose a few pounds over the past year.
Not only did I lose 20 pounds but so far I have been able to keep the weight off. I have to admit that I am currently stuck within a 5 pound weight range so I need to figure out how to take it to the next level.
Dieting vs Healthy Lifestyle Changes
The reason that this weight loss is significant to me at least, is because I'm not really focused on diets or dieting. I have chosen instead to focus on making lifestyle changes that I can maintain for the rest of my life.
I am not a diet, health and fitness professional by any stretch of the imagination.
As a matter of fact, I am just a regular working professional who needs to lose weight.
Since there's so much information readily available on the topic of diet and weight loss, I have decided to coach myself through this process and try to find a solution that works for me and not someone else.
I love to eat and don't plan on starving myself to death, but I need to find a healthy balance that will allow me to eat what I want within reason and still maintain a healthy weight.
I figure that there are plenty of people out there like me, busy professionals, moms, dads and people in general who could stand to lose a few pounds so by sharing my journey on this blog, I hope to perhaps inspire others and be inspired and motivated in return.
In my recent article 5 Diet Health And Fitness Questions I took a close look at some of the reasons for my overeating and I asked myself five very important questions that needed to be answered if I were to successfully achieve my weight loss goal.
One of the five questions that I asked myself was:
Where do you overeat?
Home
I eat really well at home because there I am in my own element! I don't bring unhealthy foods into my house so I'm not tempted to eat things that will sabotage my weight loss goal.
Fast Food Diners
I just love burgers and fries, wings, hot dogs ... you name it, I love them all but for some unknown reason giving up fast food was not really that difficult for me.
I consider myself a good cook and the quality of some fast foods has gradually caused me to lose interest.
Don't misunderstand what I'm saying here, I will still on occasion have a good quality burger and fries but not on a regular basis, this bad habit was easy to give up.
One of the reasons or excuses that I use for my poor eating habits is the amount of time it takes to prepare healthy meals.
When I dine out at a restaurant, preparation time on my part is a non-issue so I tend to make healthier choices. Someone else cooks and I eat!
What could be better than enjoying the fruits of someone else's Labor?
Work
After reviewing all of the obvious places that my poor eating habits were most likely to occur, it was finally time for me to take a look at the place where I spend the majority of my waking hours ... work!
I am employed as an HR Professional in a very large global manufacturing organization and we have two local facilities and each of them have cafeterias.
And while there are many healthy items on the menu, there also some very unhealthy ones such as lots and lots of fried foods and carbohydrate laden entrees.
Many assembly workers don't have time to mess around with salads during their lunch breaks, they want meals that will stick to their ribs.
"I was in Rome so I did as the Romans did," I ate lots of high calorie foods and I put on the pounds... lots of them!
The thing was, that unlike the workers who were busy performing manual labor all day and burning off those extra calories, I was sitting behind a desk and attending meetings all day long.
My Wake-up Call
I was walking down the sidewalk heading to a meeting one day and I caught a glimpse of my profile in the reflective glass of the office building and I was absolutely shocked at the image of myself, I was huge and I looked nothing at all like I had pictured myself in my mind.
That was my first wake-up call. I no longer "do as the Romans do."
I'm not perfect but I pay more attention to what I eat these days and it has gradually paid off in the form of slow and steady weight loss.
So yes, work is, or I should say was, the place that I used to overeat.
Taking a look at where you overeat might provide you with valuable information that you can use to improve your overall diet, health and fitness.
